SPICE MAKES A SONG ABOUT COLORISM!!!! LISTEN TO THIS…
so what did we think about this song? for me I learned that how Jamaicans refer to “brown” is different than what I conceptualize. To me, brown is dark skinned but it doesn’t sound like it means quite the same thing. interesting. my family is not really one to be talking about ppls skin tone like that so its possible thats why I’ve never heard it but I don’t think it means the same in Saint Lucia.
what do you think of the “black hypocrisy” title??
I loved the beginning of the video where she has the black girls and teaches them. and I love the honesty in the song and the way she basically PERFECTLY explains colorism in the song so you literally can’t NOT understand this even if you wanna pretend. I feel like in terms of regional music, this is some of the type of shit I’ve been hoping to see more of from ppl (I’ve written in the past about black feminism + soca/calypso/dancehall)
also the REPRESENTATION. someone needs to @@@ a few of these artists in the U.S. because the casting is phenomenal for the video…
yeah, in jamaican culture if somebody is “browning” that implies that they’re mixed race/light skin.
I’m so glad she did this song because it sheds light on how self-hating and brainwashed a lot of jamaicans are. i’ve heard so many jamaicans refer to people as “black” and use it as an insult
thank you for confirming that for me.
colorism is a serious topic to speak on in our culture. and I agree. my cousin is very dark skinned (her dad is my uncle and her mother is… someone else) and her mom always tells her shes ugly bc shes her dads skin tone. and her mom is black!! I would never even think of her mom as light skinned.
so I feel like Spice saying that its us doing it to ourselves could have a message that hits home there. I hope more ppl can listen to this and some might hear the message and change how they act
even if at first they’re doing it for shallow reasons like a popular song lol.
